When the snow “finally” starts to melt here in New Hampshire, we itch to get outside and spent time in fresh outdoors. This is also a perfect time for artisans, farmers, bakers and makers of all kinds to congregate together and display their wares in open tents at one of New Hampshire’s esteemed Food and Craft Fairs! You will find everything from wicker baskets, pickled vegetables, local paintings, delicious baked goods, authentic New England furniture, beautiful, hand-wrought jewelry, gorgeous blankets and countless other items for sale. Feel free to grab a New-England style hotdog, a cold drink, and walk casually through each tent to discover new items with every step.
Where are the spring food and craft fairs?
Although there are several locations for food and craft fairs, they tend to be in rural, open spaces that can accommodate many people at once. Some of the more known fairs are 16th Annual Spring Craft & Specialty Food Fair in Salem, the Made in NH Try it & Buy it Expo in Manchester, the Bedford Spring Fair and the 14th Annual Wolfeboro Spring Fling Craft Fair. For a complete list of spring fairs and events, please refer to these two links: New England Arts and Crafts Shows and Castleberry Fairs Event List. Are there any items you especially recommend?
As we are huge foodies up here in New Hampshire, we tend to gravitate toward anything locally grown or raised. At these fairs you can find an endless selection of hand picked fruits, vegetables to satisfy any craving. There are also wonderful assortments of canned goods such as pickled beets, carrots, ginger, garlic and even eggs! Plenty of these places will set up food stands that feature quintessential New England faire such as lobster rolls, clam cakes, clam chowder, homemade ice cream and more! When you are stuffed, definitely check out some of the local artists and jewelers that set up shop here. Their prices tend to be more affordable than those in typical retail shops and the amount of care and craftsmanship that go into each handmade piece tends to be outstanding! This is definitely the place to buy authentic New England style furniture that is especially designed to last through the every-changing weather here in New Hampshire. Regardless, there is something for everyone at these awesome fairs.
What if it’s raining on the day I plan to visit a fair?
Have no fear! We New Englanders pride ourselves on our hardy dispositions and will not be daunted by a little rain! So, in times of prospective rainfall, just make sure to wear your raingear as the tents will be up and ready to greet you when you arrive.
