What could be more magical than horseback riding at the very top of a mountain? As far as springtime activities are concerned, this one is hard to miss. “Riding In The Clouds” is a family-run horseback riding company in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. They take great pride in the beauty and health of their horses and offer exceptional riding experiences throughout the year. They have an enormous Belgian Draft, a stunning Appaloosa, and a variety of other charming horses with exceptional personalities. The trails wend near and around the area’s famous “Castle in the Clouds” giving this experience an otherworldly and majestic feel.
What kinds of rides do they offer?
“Riding in the Clouds” offers several ways to have fun outdoors with the horses. No riding experience is necessary but they do ask that all riders be at least eight years or older. One of the more popular activities is the horseback trail riding. Experienced handlers will select a horse of the right temperament for you before you embark on an hour-long trek around the woods. For younger children, pony rides are available with handlers that guide the horse on the walk. This is to add extra safety for younger children who may be afraid or incapable of handling the riding experience on their own. They also have great carriage rides for those that want to simply sit back, relax and take in the amazing scenery in the comfort of a carriage. No matter which riding experience you chose, it is certain to be both memorable and one of a kind.
What is “Castle in the Clouds?”
If you are curious about the large structure looming in the mountain, that is Lucknow or more commonly referred to as “Castle in the Clouds.” It was built in 1914 by Thomas Gustave Plant and contains a variety of interesting architectural features that were avant-garde at the time it was constructed. It overlooks Lake Winnepesaukee and the Ossipee Mountain regions from its vantage point, “The Crow’s Nest.” The horseback riding trails wend around this majestic masterpiece adding to the beauty of the ride.
Who is Zeus?
Zeus was an enormous Belgian Draft Horse at “Riding In The Clouds” that was at one time recognized as the largest horse in the world! He weighed over 3100lbs and stood over 20 hands (7’ 2”) tall! He ate more than 40 pounds of grain each day and was truly a sight to behold. It is only fitting that such a majestic creature would live so high up in the mountains. Unfortunately, Zeus passed away in January, 2014, but his legend lives on and the caretakers are more than happy to share stories and pictures of Zeus to interested riders.
