Cruise Through Over 400 Years of History on the Strong Currents of the Piscataqua River

Posted by smpolizzi on May 27, 2014 in Spring, What Else Can I Do in NH | 509 Views

Considered to have one of the strongest currents in the world, the Piscataqua River (pronounced Pis-cat-ah-qua) has been transporting goods and passengers for almost 400 years! This twelve mile tidal estuary opens out toward the Atlantic Ocean making it an ideal river to cruise along and go site seeing. Fortunately for all of us, there are a handful of boat companies that are more than happy to take passengers up along the Piscataqua to bear witness to the beauty of this coastal region. It is definitely an ideal springtime activity as the dredges of winter have melted away, leaving a burst of flowers and trees in its wake.

What reputable cruise companies do you recommend?

Although there are several charter boats and boating opportunities in New Hampshire, Portsmouth Harbor Cruises and the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company are by far the most popular. Each offer cruises in the spring, either as tours or celebratory events. Portsmouth Harbor Cruises offer three separate cruises in the spring: a Harbor Cruise, an Isles of Shoals Cruise, Inland River Cruise, an Evening Sunset and Lights Cruise. Each trip ranges from one and a quarter to two and a half hours. The second choice, Isles of Shoals Steamship Company offers more similar cruises but venture in and out of the harbor more frequently for specialty events. They offer not only harbor cruises but “party ship” nights, a “Lobster Clambake River Cruise,” a “Star Island Day Visit” and much more! Either way, you will be able to experience the breathtaking and one-of-a-kind scenic views that the harbor and the surrounding islands have to offer. When you are finished with your cruise and are looking for an overnight stay or other accommodations, please refer to this link to help plan your trip: Lodging and Accommodations. What will I see on these cruises?

The harbor is packed with plenty to see and a long and rich history to go along with it. Not only will you see working tugboats, yachts and other commercial boats hauling in and out of the port, but you will also bear witness to historic lighthouses, the cryptic and towering long-abandoned Portsmouth Naval Prison, a sprawling naval shipyard, Fort Constitution and plenty of other sites!

How much do these cruises cost?

Each cruise offers different amenities and features so the prices do vary. Here are some prices to give you a basic expectation of how much each trip will cost:
