The 10 Basic Rules of Boat Safety

1 - Carry adequate tools.  Pliers, Screwdrivers, Wrenches, vise-grips, Sharp knife.

2 - Carry approved and suitable Personal Flotation Devices (Lifejackets). Enough Lifejackets for all passengers.

3 - Tell someone where you are going and carry a proper chart & compass.

4 - Know your boat and equipment.

5 - Watch the weather.

6 - Carry sufficient fuel and water. In heavy waves your boat will take more fuel to go the same distance.

7 - Guard against fire (ensure that there is no fuel in the bilge and that fuel lines are not leaking).

8 - Ensure that your engine will be reliable (service it regularly).

9 - Do not overload and distribute the load evenly.

10 - Do not mix alcohol or drugs and boating.

Tips Against Boat Burglary

1 - Do not make your boat an easy target. Use locks, alarm systems and theft-warning decals. (While anti-theft devices are not foolproof, they can make a boat theft difficult enough to discourage many crooks.)

2 - Remove valuable items, such as electronics, cameras and binoculars, especially if you plan to be away from your boat for a long time.

3 - If your boat is left on a trailer, either use a wheel or trailer hitch lock or remove one or more of the wheels. Do not park the trailer with the hitch facing out.

4 - Keep receipts for major equipment purchases and copies of boat ownership documents on shore in a secure place. It's also a good idea to videotape or photograph your boat and its contents. For further tips check out.
